The Season Starts Tomorrow

I know it has been quite a while since I last updated the blog. But, I do have to say a few things before the College Football Season starts tomorrow. I need to put the finishing touches on the spreadsheet. This is priority number one. There is still much needed updates of the conference schedules, as well as implementation of D1-AA teams. Dan had the advice that if a team is playing DII teams not to count them as games just as the bowl formula. Great Idea Dan! Saves me time and energy, I love it.

Secondly, I am going to update the blog three days a week. This will let everyone out there reading it know there know when updates will be, so you don't have to check it randomly, unless I put some up randomly of course. But, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday should have new posts. So make sure to run by here on those days for new posts. Usually in the evening to night will be when I will post. That way I won't slack off like I have been for two weeks.

So, everyone get ready for the football to start. Also, if anyone has any tips to make this blog better please let me know, aka comment. Lets GO JACKETS!

The Moment You All Have Been Waiting For...

No, not the first weeks rankings... but close. Last year's ranking of the ACC. So without further ado:

Rank Team Win
Loss Score Conference
1 Virginia Tech 6 - 2 107.81 ACC
2 Clemson 5 - 3 99.72 ACC
3 Georgia Tech 7 - 2 99.33 ACC
4 Wake Forest 7 - 2 95.92 ACC
5 Boston College 5 - 3 92.04 ACC
6 Maryland 5 - 3 85.45 ACC
7 Virginia 4 - 4 80.21 ACC
8 Florida St. 3 - 5 78.12 ACC
9 Miami (FL) 2 - 5 71.94 ACC
10 NC State 2 - 5 66.51 ACC
11 N. Carolina 2 - 5 60.34 ACC
12 Duke 0 - 8 43.51 ACC

As you can see, Virginia Tech claimed the top stop after all the games, including the ACC Championship. I thought this was quite interesting, but what was more interesting was the fact that 5-3 Clemson was ranked higher than both 7-2 Georgia Tech and Wake Forest. This mostly had to do with the stellar defense exhibited by both Virginia Tech and Clemson. Clemson's scoring and run defense were both very good last year.

But, the surprising part is that wins and loses are still weighted 40% which I would assume would make Clemson lower, but at the same time I have wins later in the season worth more than wins earlier in the season which would cause Clemson's score to increase as well.

So, there you have it, like it or not (me included in the not). Thats what the computer says.

Ballot Update

I worked on that crazy excel file today. Yeah, it is super tedious. Previously my template for the season on had one conference, the ACC. Well, clearly if I want rank all the teams I need to be able to have all the DI-A teams in my spreadsheet. Now, I thought it was going to be pretty smooth in copying the ACC template a few times, and wham, there is the whole thing. Turns out to be a little more intricate than that.

First I had to copy the ACC template. This was pretty easy, just copy and rename. Then I had to change the names of the teams on the individual conference sheets, still not too bad. Then came the crazy part. I have a sheet that is referenced called 'Opponents'. This sheet references all the team's averages to compare with the team's they are playing... aka the opponents, hints the name. Well, this sheet references all the conference sheets and that becomes complicated making sure all the references have the right cell and number and sheet name referenced. I know everyone is completely lost, and I can't even remember what I was saying. But it is tedious. I promise.

Alright, I have not forgot that I haven't even shared with the 3 of you the results from last year's ACC games who was the best in the ACC. So someone remind me to do that tomorrow. I have a lot more work to do. I have mark the bye weeks for all the teams and continue adding all the conferences.

It will be done, I am not worried... yet.

Where did I go?

Finals suck. So, that is what I have been up too.

And, in the world of college football, the USA Today preseason poll was released. Now, this definitely does not affect my poll, but the other rankings and polls will be looked at throughout the season. The USA Today poll is the coaches poll. The coaches (aka some assistant in their respective schools athletic department) will send in their top 25 teams throughout the season. Now these aren't just any coaches, well actually they are just a bunch of coaches. There is a list somewhere I am sure but really doesn't mean anything. If you really want a list it is at the bottom of this page. But, to me these coaches must not actually watch many, if any games throughout their seasons. Now they do get to watch at least most of their own games, but other than that there is so much planning and scheming and "recruiting" that goes on who knows what these guys know. We will get back to that later. But anywho, the rankings...

Top 5
  1. USC
  2. LSU
  3. Florida
  4. Texas
  5. Michigan
Seems like a respectable group. Everyone usually has a huge jones from them throughout the year, no different this year. LSU is the popular pick, we will see. Florida did win last year so someone must have had the game on and watched them win. But, did they lose too much. Texas, isn't that were Vince Young went to school, I would rank them that high too then, right. And, Michigan. You know I was actually born in Michigan but why put them in the top 5?

Other Notables...
  • 6. West Virginia
  • 10. Ohio State
  • 13. Georgia
  • 14. Auburn
  • 15. Tennessee
  • 24. Hawaii
Well, nice spot for WVU seeing they almost saw their coach go to Alabama. Well, everyone almost went to Alabama. Ohio State lost the last game of the year last year so I think 10 is WAY too high. I think it is pretty hilarious that the three SEC teams that hate each other probably the most are 13, 14, 15. And why did they put UGA on top, they suck and you know what, if they are ranked high in my ranking system, I probably will just skip them. So, watch out. And I thought Hawaii was just funny. They used to be the Rainbows!

Just missing from the 25th spot was my beloved Jackets. They are tied with ACC rival, Boston College. Now my buddy Ryan Kane... yeah you, probably the only one reading this other than my mom and Theresa, he might get to see them play next year because his new football team sucks. Anyway, Tech starts out against Notre Dame, and they are below us, so it looks like the Jackets will be the Favorite. Tech usually works out better as the underdog (see Auburn 2003 and 2005 as well as other in football and basketball). But some evidence for the lack of brains in ranking for the coaches; someone thought that DUKE was worthy of a 25th ranking. DUKE! Right, this should be fun!
